MAYA ORGANIC believes that this is too much of a risk for large and established labels as it will have serious implications in the long term. Thus, even though it is required to be careful of rising costs of products, eventually it is more economical to invest in developing proper infrastructure, facilities and safety standards for all the people in the product chain to work, as it ensures
a) Timely delivery,
b) Low levels of rejection and
c) Proper implementation of social standards and compliance.
MAYA ORGANIC as promoter of bottom-up social compliance for people - owned enterprises : The MAYA ORGANIC Garments Initiative is a programme initiated by MAYA that brings informal sector workers together under one roof, as it is believed that otherwise, it is impossible to ensure social compliance at each step of the production chain. The workers run their own collective enterprise - an ORGANIC collective - initially in the premises of MAYA ORGANIC and later, in their own set up.
Their work includes stitching and any form of hand work such as bead work, chamki, hari, crochet work, and knitting or fabric button making.
Central to MAYA ORGANIC is a labour and social compliance. This draws from a bottom-up approach where the compliance is evolved by the collectives themselves through a process that seeks to continuously improve labour standards and social protection, looking at developmental aspects beyond the workplace and towards the family and community. Such development compliance works to improve each collective from its current level, rather than attempting to achieve a top-down absolute standard.
